M. E. H. said Not as Helpful for Younger Widows. Overall, this book is good for those having to endure the experience of being a widow, but it seems geared more towards women of another, older generation where women traditionally didn't work outside of the home and depended on their husbands to do the typical "male" things, like handle finances, home repair, etc. I lost my husband very recently and very suddenly, but have had a career for a long time and certainly know how to handle all the finances, etc. The book assumes that widows totally identify themselves as "homemakers" and through their husbands. It gi. "She Understands!!!" according to Brenda Cobb Murphy. I was expecting to be disappointed in this book but I wasn't. Not only is it helpful in all the areas a new widow has to deal with but I found that she put things into words that, prior to reading this book, had been only feelings. I felt much more "normal" after reading it. It also helped me process some of my grief and to feel that someone FINALLY understood what I was going through. This book is well worth reading. I liked what she said in the Preface: " and of our struggles to grow from one-half a couple to a whole person. The quest is 'wholeness'." I also l. Amazon Customer said Perfect gift for grieving widow. This was a gift for my mother-in-law who recently lost her husband. As someone who does not have a large circle of friends, she found comfort in getting advice from someone who had gone through this type of loss. The author was able to connect with her on a very deep level. It provided the my MIL the right words of experience and emotional guidance to turn a significant corner in her grieving process, something that we could not provide.
