DESCRIPTION:
"Fascinating for All Ages" according to Jane Carmody. Weird Rocks is an excellent children's book on so many levels. This is an interesting, entertaining, and informative book with wonderfully drawn, colorful illustrations. It would be a huge mistake to think this book would appeal only to children interested in rocks. The content is fascinating and would peak the interest of anyone young or old, male or female. Books like Weird Rocks open our awareness of the fascinating natural world around us. I am not a friend or a relative of the author, nor of the illustrator--I have never met them. However, I applaud their efforts to show us that nature is a lot cooler than video. Wonderful for Both Learning and For Having Fun This book is wonderful for families and teachers who want to increase their children’s connection with both nature and science. What is more enjoyable than collecting and researching rocks? This book is a wonderful bridge between the collecting and the learning pieces. For a young beginner it serves as a wonderful introduction to the identification of interesting rocks. For older readers, who already have some knowledge, the trivia and uniqueness of the rocks in this book is a great motivator. It could also be used as a springboard for planning some great outings or field trips.. A fun rock book! This book provides kids (and adults) a fun and interesting way of learning about rocks. Some of the schools in my area are using it in their classrooms. I love that the author explains the science of each rock, provides a drawing, and then a fun fact that makes you giggle! It's a winning combination for kids, and a fun ride for us adults as well. I highly recommend the book. It's a perfect gift for kids, teachers, school library, or fundraisers!

These are only some of the surprises in Weird Rocks, a must-have guide for young rock hounds. Author Michele Corriel introduces readers to sixteen unusual rocks and explains the science behind what each one does and how it does it. We think of them as ordinary objects, but rocks can do amazing things: there are rocks that glow and rocks that travel through space, rocks that float and rocks that burn. Youngsters will discover what makes one kind of rock smell like a rotten egg, what rock acts like a magnet, and what rock contains hidden treasure. High-quality photographs, colorful paintings, and hilarious cartoons add visual delight to this entertaining and informative book.
Kristi Niemeyer --Montana State of the Arts . Young sleuths will learn about magnetite, which attracts metal like a magnet; floating balls of volcanic pumice; the crystal treasures just waiting to be discovered inside geodes; scheelite, a mineral that glows blue under ultra-violet light, the sulfur-infused rocks that smell like rotten eggs; meteorites that have landed here from outer space; and the mysterious ringing rocks that make a bell-like sound when hit with a hammer
