DESCRIPTION:

By the award-winning author of Team of Rivals and The Bully Pulpit, Wait Till Next Year is Doris Kearns Goodwin’s touching memoir of growing up in love with her family and baseball.Set in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, Wait Till Next Year re-creates the postwar era, when the corner store was a place to share stories and neighborhoods were equally divided between Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans. Most important, Goodwin describes with eloquence how the Dodgers’ leaving Brooklyn in 1957, and the death of her mother soon after, marked both the end of an era and, for her, the end of childhood.. We meet the people who most influenced Goodwin’s early life: her mother, who taught her the joy of books but whose debilitating illness left her housebound: and her father, who taught her the joy of baseball and to root for the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and Gil Hodges

"Doris Kearns Goodwin Does It Again" according to Nancy McK. Although this is very different from her other books,Dr. Goodwin hits a real home rub with this book. It was especially meaningful for me having grown up in a similar crazy baseball family. It elicited so many memories that I felt that she was telling my story, not hers. I recommended this book to a younger friend and she loved it just as much as I did. I think it will have a universal appeal as a delightful book. Well done. A Reflection of My Own Youth Robert Deckert Having grown up in New Jersey during the 40's and 50's, most of what Ms. Goodwin writes about is very familiar to me. The book brought back tons of memories of my childhood, rooting for the Phillies against the Dodgers. Her style is very readable and vivid. I have read other books by her--notably "No Ordinary Times" and "Team of Rivals" so I eagerly read her stuff. I love it all.. mlm said This is not just a great book for Dodger fans but also a wonderful story. This is not just a great book for Dodger fans but also a wonderful story about growing up in a small town in America. Throughout the book, the author also shares many insightful history lessons with the reader. All in all an excellent book and very hard to put down. Loved it!
