Must Read for WWI - excellent for elementary aged children to adults TheCoasties Albert Marrin was recommended by homeschooling expert Carole Joy Seid. This was the first of Mr. Marrins' books that we have read, and I have to tell you that this is an outstanding study of WWI.It was difficult to find anything about WWI for elementary and jr high aged students, much less that wasn't the typical BORING, DRY, DULL text-book type material that puts students in classrooms to sleep. The Yanks Are Coming is exciting, any easy read, and I highly recommend it for ages 8 and up.Mr. Marrin walks the reader through t. "Excellent" according to Abigail. Albert Marrin does a masterful job at making nonfiction as exciting as possible. His voice is not dry or overly detailed like a textbook; rather he tells true stories in an interesting way, and makes you want to keep reading. I was very unfamiliar with World War I when I read The Yanks Are Coming, and it proved to be the perfect way to begin my studies. Albert Marrin covered a lot of information in a relatively quick read. I highly recommend!

Marrin relates the gripping story of how the Yanks "came over" to aid the European Allies and turn the tide in the first Great War. How the United States mobilized industry, trained doughboy soldiers, and promoted the war at home makes for fascinating reading in one of the few books on this topic for young adults. The human cost of the war is poignantly related in tales of the action at Chateau Thierry and Belleau Woods, in the air with the daring men of the Army Air Corps, and with the Lost Battalion at the Battle of Meuse-Argonne. From the sinking of the Lusitania to Armistice Day, Marrin tells the heartrending and inspiring story of the "war to end all wars." Illustrated with maps and photographs.
