DESCRIPTION:
I wish I could enjoy this book. Li Pi I wish I could enjoy this book. I loved Red Dragon Rising and Red Pheonix - as well as Hawksley's previous novel - Dragon Fire. But I couldn't enjoy this one. The novel has an intriguing premise - that a series of missteps cause small regional conflicts to escalate to global thermonuclear war - but the execution is deeply flawed. For one, none of the characters act in a believable fashion - and the escalation feels incredibly forced. It felt like characters were randomly struck with bouts of mental retardation.A minor point - but another knock against the book is that it's filled with random technically inac. Dave Catt said Solid but sombre.. A well written but confronting book. Clearly presents a disaster cascade that never seems implausable. This book made me think (and hug my kids extra tight). Post a copy to your local politician, just to give them the willies too. With a title like this, it was never gunna be a box of fluffy kittens. Detailed and Compelling Aspiring Author A view of how a nuclear war might happen from the personal perspectives of world leaders in the relevant hot spots. A bit on the long side, with perhaps one sub-plot too many. The first missle to land in the U.S. hits 20 kilometers from my home.
After Iraq there is a lull, and then the opening stages of the Third World War. Hundreds die in the Indian parliament in Delhi, the president of Pakistan is assassinated, and a U.S. No one is yet aware that the war is already unstoppable. Detail by authentic detail, Humphrey Hawksley chillingly captures the unthinkable—a world speeding towards its own destruction.. America and Britain discover chilling links between the attacks, but U.S. President Jim West wants to avoid another war. military base is hit by a North Korean missile
Humphrey Hawksley's face and voice are known to millions through his broadcasts on BBC TV news and radio. He is the author of the best-sellers Dragon Strike (with Simon Holberton) and Dragon Fire, as well as two well-reviewed thrillers.
"A gripping story, told with great imagination, but also with the knowledge and authority that one rarely sees in thrillers."
