When one of the handlers fails to close Rowf’s cage properly, the two dogs make a daring escape into the English countryside, where they befriend a red fox who helps them survive in the wild. Rowf, a shaggy black mongrel, and Snitter, a black-and-white fox terrier, are among dozens of animals being cruelly held in a testing facility in North West England. An unforgettable tale of fantasy and adventure, a powerful exploration of the limits of human cruelty and kindness, The Plague Dogs stands as a modern-day classic.. But as rumors circulate that the dogs may have been the test subjects for biological weapons and could be carrying a terrible plague, they soon find themselves targets of a great dog hunt. Local farmers, politicians, scientists, and even the military join in the search to track them down
Something to pass the time. I gave this book four stars because the story was engaging and I got caught up in the characters of the dogs and fox in spite of myself. There were no surprises here. I will say that Mr. Adams has a wonderful imagination and conveys what he thinks these animals might experience. The book was a slow-go in parts, and the illustrations and maps added very little to the book. The plot was bad guys vs good guys and in that way there was no suspense. I have to admit, I cried at the end, which is out of character for me. Then I did some research about the writing of the book and found that the author actually wanted to have the book end differ. Virginia L. Moss said Richard Adams is one of the best writers, hands down. Richard Adams is one of the best writers, hands down. This story was sad, joyful, exciting, scary. Very telling of the things that people will do, in the name of 'science', and the cunning, camaraderie, and savvy of our canine friends. Hard to put down. I usually woke with the book in my hands, and my lamp still on.. "A Gem of a Novel" according to D. K. Nestor. Wonder read from a great writer. I enjoyed it so much I bought another copy of this gem for a friend. Highly recommended for animal lovers and those who want a great tale. It is dark and brutal at times in dealing with animal experiments though.
