DESCRIPTION:
Not quite up to the previous novels, but still good Jim Wright I came to the Marcus Didius Falco mysteries much later in the series (A Body in the Bath House) via Audible; the story was lively and the narrator distinct. I'm more familiar with the period of the late Roman Republic, but Davis' cheeky humor and fun characterizations have helped breathe life into . "A Nice Undemanding Read" according to susankaye. My only Lindsey Davis book, although I once had the whole list in my "To Be Read" notebook (which eventually got so big I pared it down). It was pleasant enough but I wouldn't put them back on the list, Outstanding was the level of research that was behind the story. So you have to say it was also . "Germany - A Place No Roman Would Go - Unless he was Falco!" according to I am Blind Man. Falco is on the road again, travelling to another forsaken corner of the Empire and he is not very happy. “Seamless blending of humor, history and adventure.” Publishers Weekly“Falco's never-ending wise cracks, humorous self-abasement, and genuine niceness are more than enough to captivate readers; the rich historical details add a caloric layer of frosting.” School Library Journal
On a journey that only a stoic could survive, Falco meets with disarray, torture, and murder. To Falco, an undercover tour of Germania is an assignment from Hades. Which Falco is eagerly hoping for as, back in Rome, the Titus Caesar is busy trying to make time with Helena Justina, a senator's daughter and Falco's girlfriend.Lindsey Davis' historical mystery Iron Hand of Mars is a "Seamless blending of humor, history and adventure" (Publishers Weekly).. His one hope: in the northern forest lives a powerful Druid priestess who perhaps can be persuaded to cease her anti-Rome activities and work for peace. When Germanic troops in the service of the Empire begin to rebel, and a Roman general disappears, Emperor Vespasian turns to the one man he can trust: Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer whose rates are low enough that even the stingy Vespasian is willing to pay them
