DESCRIPTION:

"The Cruel Sea" is as relevant today as it was when originally published I first read Nicholas Monsarrat's "The Cruel Sea" as a young U.S. Navy sailor, circa 1965-66. I had forgotten just how great this novel is in its depiction of war in the Atlantic Ocean in the early days of World War II, albeit from the standpoint of the British. The story of the cruelty of war, and the sea itself, is vividly describe. "the hard life as a sailor." according to Philip. The story starts slow as they go through the crew, their backgrounds and their first corvette. It's nice that the whole story provides a comprehensive look at life on the sea as well as life while they're on leave. He goes through all the scenarios faced by soldiers. He voices his opinions on war through lockart. You can't be distracte. I happened to be editing a book set in that time frame (I'm a professional editor/proofreader/writer) and it helped me to give g A classic; I learned a lot about a segment of WWI I did not know much about. Further, I happened to be editing a book set in that time frame (I'm a professional editor/proofreader/writer) and it helped me to give good feedback to the author on some aspects of that time.
