DESCRIPTION:

There is also a valuable appendix of "Suggested Books for Children".. This book provides practical suggestions and examples of how to incorporate a multicultural perspective in all of our day-to-day interactions with children - from making up classroom rules to planning field trips. The author introduces new themes into multiculturalism by showing us how environmental exploitation and consumerism are related to social inequities and by demonstrating how a respect for the natural world can and must be woven into early childhood education. Citing classroom experiences and personal anecdotes, this volume shows us - often quite humorously - that the road to raising and teaching children with multicultural perspectives may not be an easy one, but it is one filled with hope and joy. This second edition of the "classic" text retains its original focus on children's understanding of race, socioeconomic class, culture and gender, while also expanding the definition and scope of multicultural education. The final chapter is written as a story - a vision of how individuals and institutions can change and create a more caring and just world

. Ramsey is Professor of Psychology and Education and Director of Gorse Child Study Center at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.Sonia Nieto is a professor emerita of language, literacy, and culture at the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"Got for a class" according to Judeth L.. I got this book as a textbook for one of my classes. I find a lot of her argument to inferred, taken from a study out of context, or just made up from current stereotypes. Though the topic makes you think, I feel that the entire thesis is sloppily argued.. "I had to buy this for one of my Master's" according to Ashley. I had to buy this for one of my Master's classes. The author, Patricia Ramsey seems to be very biased and one sided. Her thoughts in the book appear to be not objective at all, and it's all about "white superiority.". Four Stars Misty This book was required by my instructor for an early childhood education class.

"In a nutshell, the third edition is superb."
