DESCRIPTION:
Probably not a bad book, but I have a mixed feeling toward this book: I bought it in the hope that it could serve as a stepping stone from general algebra to textbooks such as Atiyah/MacDonald and Eisenbud. Well, the topics covered do fit the purpose, but this book does not make an easy reading. In fact the writing style of Sharp is dry and tasteless, so it is rather boring if attempting to read from cover to cover. Thus I use it for reference, that is, to look up things I have to have remembered but I don't. I will appreciate it very much that if, in the third edition,. Five Stars Wonderful book! I recommend.
Professor Sharp's book provides a good foundation from which the reader can proceed to more advanced works in commutative algebra or algebraic geometry. This introductory account of commutative algebra is aimed at students with a background only in basic algebra. This new edition contains additional chapters on regular sequences and on Cohen-Macaulay rings.
' a very useful stepping-stone for students in their study of commutative algebra.' H. But it will never be an easy ride.' John Baylis, The Mathematical Gazette . Mitsch, Universität Wien' Sharp is an excellent guide, clearly aiming never to leave his readers floundering This standard of care for his readers is maintained throughout the book this is a superb guide to an attractive and important area of mathematics, and one from which I will derive pleasure as a retirement project
