Kim Justice said Review: Skip Rock Shallows by Jan Watson. Talk about a book I was not able to put down, and this one would be in the top five. The cover portrays a young lady who seems to have or need all the comforts of home. Which in this era may not have been much more than most. But the harshness she is in for may soon be more than Lilly Gray Corbett is willing to handle.I loved the fact that this book is set in a coal camp in Kentucky. Why you may say. I was raised in and around coal towns in West Virginia. My family has been from coal minors as far back as I could tell you. So some of the backwater, stubborn, superstitious, Man drive. "Lovely story" according to Kindle Customer. This story is about a young woman doctor, in early 1900s, who goes to a small coal mining town on a temporary basis. The people have trouble accepting a woman doctor but she earns their respect and friendship. When she is offered a position in Boston, she has to decide if she wants to leave this community she has come to love or to stay. This is good story about love, taking risks, and learning to lean on God for the directions in life we should take.. Cute Joanne crump So this was a standard "educated woman doctor goes to backwoods gulch to set up practice" story. Kind of mushy but cute. Redeeming factor was lots of good info about folk medicine.

The people of Skip Rock, KY, are hard, and they believe they know a woman’s place. VERDICT: Great plot development and skilled character building make Watson’s latest historical a sure bet for fans of Karen Kingsbury. The attraction she feels for a handsome coal miner confuses her even more. The character’s struggles with faith and trust in God are very realistic and heartfelt.
