S.E. said Clever, if loquacious, entertainment. Anyone who knows anything about Buckley will know of his extensive vocabulary and elocution. So, too, is it an unavoidable aspect of this novel. It sometimes reads more as a means to display his writing prowess than for the true purpose of telling a story. The end result is a novel that, though enjoyable and clever on the whole, suffers from long passages at times that could either be eliminated or truncated and have no effect on the story. It is not, though, reason enough to pass on this book. Charming fiction from a writer with his own spook background William F. Buckley Jr. showed he had a talent for fiction, as well as non-fiction writing, with this enjoyable espionage novel, the first of his Blackford Oakes adventures. Buckley unashamedly brings his old-boy background to bear in creating an Oakes who plausibly finds his way from Yale to Windsor Castle within a few months. Buckley, who served as his fictional Oakes does in the CIA of the early 1950s, has me now wondering how much of this is autobiographical.A World War II ace graduating f. OFG (Old Fat Guy) said Ugh. Puerile at best. Buckley should have confined himself to (ONLY) playing the harpsichord.
Buckley Jr. The legendary founder of the modern conservative movement, William F. was the author of many celebrated nonfiction books, including God and Man at Yale, as well as the bestselling Blackford Oakes spy novels and Elvis in the Morning.
