This book is awesomely detailed, ingeniously plotted, judiciously gory, and fantastically imagined. If you haven't read it, you've never had the creeps. He's obsessed with William Blake's bizarre painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun, believing there's a red dragon within him, the personification of his demonic drives. That killer, Francis Dolarhyde, works in a film lab, where he picks his victims by studying their home movies. Lying on a cot in his cell with Alexandre Dumas's Le Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine open on his chest, Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter makes his debut in this legendary horror novel, which is even better than its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs. Flashbacks to Dolarhyde's terrifying childhood and superb stream-of-consciousness prose get us right there inside his head. It's just too creepy to get inside a killer's twisted mind. Jadrick said I've searched high and low for crime thrillers like Red Dragon. I’ve searched high and low for crime thrillers like Red Dragon. They’ve all paled in comparison thus far. This one is scary, smart, fast paced, and original. A formula that rarely evens out in a novel. My favorite character is Will Graham. His abilities and skill are something I’d love to see in other detectives. He’s a special investigator for the FBI, and uses empathetic reasoning to get into the killers head. And he’s good at it.The antagonist is a serial. Renée Reads said Interesting read even after watching. I was concerned after watching the movies and tele shows that the books would be too horrific to read. I was assured it wouldn't be and it wasn't. While I enjoyed the read even knowing the premise the only thing I felt the book added to the story was some of the background on the Red Dragon. I find it difficult to review the book objectionable because I found the visual representation much richer and more psychologically thrilling than the text.
