I've pondered the review I was going to write (if I was even going to write one) - so here goes. The writing is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. However, a lot of time is spent on trivial details that the reader doesn't really care about. It is also too long, and repeats in places. At times I was reminded of Charles Dickens, who got paid by the word. There are also some shifts about who is thinki. "exhausting but fulfilling" according to Nancy Anne. I give very few books five stars--only two I can think of--Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell & Beach Music by Pat Conroy. Besides an intriguing story line, the five star books must have beautiful language, historical value, memorable characters, and teach me something new.
