Never happier than when he was in the thick of action, Hamilton was an excellent tactician but, by 1915, and in a situation like Gallipoli, his style of leadership was outdated. Moreover, the commander, General Sir Ian Hamilton was at fault in the way he conducted his campaign

Good review I read Hamilton's two-volume diary during the Gallipoli campaign before I read this. Looking back, I'm not sure if that was the proper order. This book gives great insight to his career and how he came to be the commander of Allied forces sent to open the straights and the battle of Gallipoli. It also points out how his experiences molded him and his thinking. Most of my reading about WWI to this point has focused on the battlefields in France, this book greatly expanded my understanding of Britain’s role in other areas, and how their battlefield commanders brought experiences from the Boer War into play.

The Great War . This is an abosrbing and fascinating study of fallibility An outstanding work. 7/10
