Susan Hasler has created a hysterical, in both the "funny" and "manic" definitions of the word, look at the CIA terrorism intelligence gathering. Anyone who works in or has dealt with a large corporation can relate to and smile at the stifling bureaucracy and coworker characters. A little confusing as different chapters are told from a different character's viewpoint, but overall, funny, heartfelt, and sobering. An excellent read.

Madeline James and her crew of brilliant misfits struggle to piece together shreds of evidence gleaned from mountains of raw data (slag) in a race to uncover a plot that threatens to dwarf the body count of 9/11. Readers will be left aghast at the toll politics and basic self-serving, cover-your-ass government policies take on agencies and individuals whose job is to keep our country safe. They must also battle a management structure bent on denying their findings
Hell-bent on making them listen, Maddie pulls together an elite team of eccentrics—a disgruntled senior analyst, a bioterrorism specialist with hypochondria, and a horn-dog chemical weapons expert. They wage a fight against the extremists plotting the attack and the officials anxious to please their higher-ups.. Branded an intelligence failure after the last devastating attack, CIA counterterrorism analyst Maddie James vows not to let tragedy strike again. Believing that a dormant terrorist cell is plotting a mass-casualty assault, Maddie warns the Administration. Unfortunately, her words are off-message in an election year, when the President claims the US is winning the war on terror
