One of those groups might have been involved in the ambush.Jack's a terrific thief, and managed to do a passable imitation of a mercenary, but those talents don't help him much on the plantation. Fourteen-year-old Jack Morgan has gone through a lot since he met Draycos, a dragon-like K'da warrior he saved when everyone else in Draycos' scout fleet was killed in an ambush. But that's not his biggest problem now. Jack can only hope that's enough.. The slavemaster knows Jack's no ordinary slave, and has his eye on him. Nobody, that is, except Draycos. On the planet Brum-a-dum Jack gets hired to work on a plantation owned by a Brummga whose family has ties to mercenary groups. Here, he's just one of many slaves, with little hope of finding the information he came for. Ever since, Jack and Draycos, who slips onto Jack's back like a living tattoo, have been trying to track down the people responsible for the massacre. Jack, who's been in tight spots before, knows that can only mean trouble. On the heavily fortified grounds of the alien plantation, there's no way to get out, and nobody to help him
Non-spoilery review E. Obal My favorite book of the series, it's a thrilling, scary ride that doesn't shy away from the ugly side of humanity, while managing to keep the tone from dragging into doldrums. The characters learn and develop together, and their adventures, as ever, develop new wrinkles in the over-arching plot.. "A fun read" according to WileyA fun read Wiley418 This was a fine book. Though I enjoyed "Dragon and Soldier" more, I felt this was an excellent story. Zahn's work is often called formulaic. This is true, but I nonetheless find him to remain my favorite sci-fi author. I suppose I enjoy his particular formula. While the Dragonback series is a young adult series I thoroughly enjoy them and "Dragon and Slave" did not disappoint. The pace is quick and the story remains interesting with continued character development. I definitely recommend. 18. This was a fine book. In the effort to help Draycos find the mercenaries that attacked his advance team, Jack gets himself sold into slavery. In the process, he finds the information he's seeking, and frees some slaves in the bargain. The climax of this story has to be read to believed. Zahn is at his best in getting his characters in a tight spot and then getting them out again.
