Stan Britt's Bio of Dexter Gordon: a Cursory, Superficial Account of Gordon's Life Other reviewers have given this biography five stars. While its author Stan Britt covers all the bases in presenting information about Gordon, his life, his career as a jazz musician, and his discography, he does so in a manner that is all so cursory and perfunctory that the book left me wanting more. First of all, the text (of the paperback edition) runs a measly 168 pages. Over and over again, I found myself wanting more information which Britt d. Bomojaz said Long Tall Dexter. Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was a seminal figure in modern jazz; his huge, magisterial tone was awe-inspiring, especially when heard on slow ballads. Influenced by the stylings of Lester Young, combined with the musical vocabulary of bebop, Gordon produced some of the most memorable jazz performances during the bop/hard bop era. Stan Britt does a good job of relating the Gordon story. The first half of the book is a fairly straight-forward acco. Amazon Customer said Viva LTD. Well written account of Dex's life. In contrast to some jazz biographies, it doesn't get mired in a repetitive account of lineups, gigs, and recording dates. Rather, Britt manages to flesh out Dexter well, emphasizing his inimitable physical presence and huge tone. One criticism would be an over-reliance on long quotations from critics and other jazzmen, but most of these offer interesting glimpses of the artist. I give it five stars because this i
