From the New York Times bestselling author of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane comes a chilling mystery—Prep meets The Crucible. Joan’s buzzes with rumor; rumor blossoms into full-blown panic. Soon the media descends on Danvers, Massachusetts, as everyone scrambles to find something, or someone, to blame. With her signature wit and passion, New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe delivers an exciting and suspenseful novel, a chilling mystery that raises the question, what’s really happening to the girls at St. Until they can’t. First it’s the school’s queen bee, Clara Rutherford, who suddenly falls into uncontrollable tics in the middle of class. Her mystery illness quickly spreads to her closest clique of friends, then more students and symptoms follow: seizures, hair loss, violent coughing fits. College applications, the battle for valedictorian, deciphering boys’ texts: Through it all, Colleen Rowley and her friends are expected to keep it together. Pollution? Stress? Or are the girls faking? Only Colleen—who’s been reading The Crucible for extra credit—comes to realize what nobody else has: Danvers was once Salem Village, where another group of girls suffered from a similarly bizarre epidemic three centuries ago . . . Inspired by true events—from seventeenth-century colonial life

Meanwhile, Colleen begins work on a research paper for the history substitute on an actual person absent from Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Joan's High School of Danvers, Massachusetts in 2012. Amid a growing media circus, diagnoses are offered and then dismissed. Ann's tale continues in between glimpses into the life of Colleen Rowley, a senior at the exclusive St. The pressure in the final semester is intense for Colleen and her classmates, who are all competing for places in top colleges. The protagonist's research persuades her that the cause of the Salem Witch trials was far from supernatural and that the same "force" might be at work at St. Howe's use of red herrings and the "ripped from the headlines" narrative will keep readers guessing until the final reveal.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wiscons

Colleen Rowley and her friends are expected to keep it together though dealing with everything from the battle for valedictorian, college applications and deciphering boys’ texts. Until they are unable to do so.Clara Rutherford who is the school’s queen bee suddenly falls into uncontr. Interesting concept, but not enough mystery/suspense I thought it was fascinating that the author tied in the events of the Salem Witch Trials to the present day, where this mystery illness has the same town crying foul, so much so that it gets national attention. Interesting story, strong characters, but not enough mystery/suspense for me. I do wish it had a stronger ending; however I think overall it was a good read.. Kindle Customer said Entertaining. This was an interesting book about one of my favorite subjects, The Salem Witch Trials. I live nearby and the areas described in the book are some of my favorite places to visit. I really enjoyed the comparisons of the mysterious illness of the Danvers girls and the Salem village girls. Much was taken from actual historical info, which I appreciated. There were some characters who ended up being rather pointless and I didn't love t
