The characters are well developed and comprehensible, while clearly inhabiting their time period, its standards, rules & mores. The period itself is brought to life as part of the narrative, touches of daily life made real trough the experience of the characters, rather than numbing story-bogging descriptions of food, street scene, etc. Dial. rd I've read in the series, and I'm already sad that there's only 1 more.
