It should also be in the library of anyone who collects field guides, if for no reason other than you can occasionally take it down and be reminded of what is possible when art and design and purpose are treated as equal parts of a final product."--Bird Watcher's Digest. Its innovative design, comprehensiveness, and attention to detail set a new standard for bird guides."--Wildlife Activist"If you are birding in Europe, you must have this guide. It should be on the shelf of many North American bird watchers, especially those who live along the Atlantic coast, where many European birds are found. "For birders and ornithologists alike, this is without question the best field guide for European birds on the market today

They illustrate typical habitats and characteristic behavior, including birds in flight, feeding, hunting, and perching; they add pointers and captions to the plates to show key field marks; and they arrange birds for easy comparison of confusing plumages. On the bookshelf or in the coat pocket, it will become an essential companion for every birder, ornithologist, and traveler to Europe.. It was terrifically easy t. N. Whiting said Great Field Guide. This is what a field guide ought to be.Text is opposite the drawings. The field marks are emphasised, with color drawings big and detailed enough to be useful.Good range maps are on the same page. Range maps include breeding, migration and winter distribution. This field guide also covers a good portion of the Middle East--including Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. It also includes North Africa. The single deficiency is that abundancy symbols are given only for Great Britain and Ireland. The text is lively. Fantastic field guide I purchased this book for a trip to Iceland. Well written, clear and thorough descriptions and excellent drawings with multiple poses and alternate and juvenile forms. Especially helpful is the introductory paragraphs to each family of birds and also the size comparison of related birds. Compares very favorably to the Sibley North America Guides, which I consider one of the best. Highly recommended!
